Quick Tips & Getting Around

There are no student discounts here. The only relatively expensive sight is the Open-Air Museum, which at 12YTL is completely worthwhile.

Eat up! Like most backpacker ghettos, Goreme is not known for gourmet dining. However, the specialities of the Anatolian region are easier to find here than in Istanbul because everything's concentrated in a small town. Once you've identified the best renditions, stuff yourself with gozleme (filled crepes), manti (lamb dumplings), and lahmacun (thin lamb pizza). The deliciously chewy "maras" dondurma (ice-cream) is easily available around the region as well.

Getting Around

There are long-distance buses between Goreme and Istanbul, although you may have to stop at Nevsehir, the capitol of Cappadocia and take a dolmus (minibus) to Goreme. From Antep I rode to Kayseri, then transferred to the bus to Goreme.

Goreme is so small, you can cover it on foot in about 30 minutes. To get to other towns like Uchisar, take a dolmus for 1YTL.

Some of the places covered on a Cappadocia tour would be difficult for an independent traveler to get to. The tour is definitely recommended (even for those allergic to groups) because the transportation really helps.
