There are more impressive "dead cities" (ghost towns) around Syria, but since I couldn't afford to go alone, I tagged along with a couple who wanted to see this one. The tortoise may have been the most interestin part.

Due to lagging people on our tour and a itinerary that I think should have been flipped, we were at Ihlara Gorge right before lunchtime. I don't think any of my pictures turned out particularly well in this light.

Kaymakli is an extensive underground city, featuring wells, wine-presses, storage and livestock pens. During the numerous invasions of Anatolia, people would live here for months until it was safe to emerge.

Walking back to the bus after viewing the sunrise on Nemrut Dagi. For 5 in the morning, the crowd at the summit was impressive. This moment, when everyone straggled back to the parking lot at his or her own pace, was the only chance to feel the solitude of the mountain.
