Dahab's Blue Lagoon. Locals are justifiably proud of its "three shades of blue," but are deluded when they refer to the mass of tiny pebbles as "the sandy beach." It's a marvel that with all these deserts around, so many people do not understand what sand is.

Dumpster diving | Nuweiba, Egypt

Spotted this while passing the time at a cafe. We had a couple hours to kill in Nuweiba because the bus from Dahab arrives too late for the slow ferry but much early for the fast. After many cups of tea and many puffs on the shisha, I took a walk to find this camel eating out of the dumpster like a stray dog. Brilliant last moment in Egypt.

The desert was bumpy and the ancient jeep uncomfortable, but the vastness and beauty of Wadi Rum was amazing. Already dying to be there again, sleeping under the stars, gazing out at red sand at dawn.

Wadi Rum | Jordan

Jebel Rum Camping was a wonderful place to pass the night. Delicious Bedouin feast including loads of lamb, chicken and side dishes, and entertainment in the form of singing and dancing provided by the Bedouin staff. The tents were comfortable, featuring small beds rather than sleeping bags...no worries about scorpions or sandy underwear.

Still, the campground had a slight touch of "army" look to it...
